Sonat v. Lloyd’s of London Insurers
Chris King and Nikaa Jordan of Lightfoot were recently retained as appellate counsel in this complex insurance contract dispute. In 2001, Sonat sued more than twenty-five insurance syndicates (collectively “LMI”), primarily alleging breach of an insurance contract in failing to reimburse Sonat for environmental remediation costs. After many years of litigation, including two jury trials and two interlocutory appeals to the Alabama Supreme Court, the third and final phase of the trial was scheduled for late summer of 2011. Lightfoot attorneys assisted in that phase with record and error preservation, but the trial court granted summary judgment in LMI’s favor and rendered final and appealable the judgments entered against LMI in the first and second phases of the trial. The notice of appeal and related submissions for twenty-two of the syndicates have just been filed.
