Supreme Court Reverses $82 Million Verdict in GM Crashworthiness Case

Dec 12, 2003   Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama (December 12, 2003) -- The Alabama Supreme Court today reversed an $82 million verdict against General Motors Corporation and remanded the case to the Circuit Court of Bullock County, Alabama for a new trial.  The reversal was based in part on the trial court's failure to strike five jurors for cause after it was revealed in voir dire that the jurors had relationships with plaintiffs' counsel.

Lightfoot, Franklin & White was retained after the initial verdict of $122 million was returned in this crashworthiness case on May 2, 2002.  The trial court remitted the verdict to $82 million pursuant to Alabama's tort reform statute, following which General Motors appealed. Warren Lightfoot argued the case in the Alabama Supreme Court on October 7, 2003.
