Lightfoot CTO Corey Thomas and Partner Jack Sharman Host ITLA Podcast

Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC partner Jackson R, Sharman and Chief Technology Officer Corey Thomas hosted the latest International Legal Technology Association podcast episode released on Nov. 19. Both Sharman and Thomas are members of the firm’s Innovation Committee. 

During “ITLA Just-In-Time: Denmark’s Breakthrough AI Law,” Sharman and Thomas covered Denmark’s new artificial intelligence (AI) law designed to protect individuals’ images and voices from misuse by AI. They also discussed how AI is changing social engineering, what IT, HR and accounting teams should prioritize in the new remote world and where U.S. regulation may be heading. 

“The new law in Denmark doesn’t make any distinction about whether the use is offensive or inappropriate. It vests in the citizens a right to their image, likeness and appearance,” Sharman said during the episode. “That could have significant implications for the development of AI and its deployment in law firms and in public and private companies.” 

Thomas noted that investing in a multi-layered cybersecurity approach is critical to an organization's financial health as AI and phishing scams become increasingly complex. 

“Sophisticated firms have been duped out of money just by rudimentary tools,” Thomas said. “While AI deepfakes make it more difficult to determine what’s reality, it’s vital to provide education and encourage users to slow down before clicking on a  potentially damaging link or email.” 

Sharman leads Lightfoot’s White-Collar Criminal Defense & Corporate Investigations practice group. He handles and takes to trial matters involving kickback allegations, environmental offenses, public corruption, antitrust and price-fixing charges, gambling, congressional investigations, healthcare fraud and the False Claims Act (FCA).
