Lightfoot Secures Defense Win for Obstetrician/Gynecologist in Medical Malpractice Case
April 16, 2018
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 16, 2018) — Lightfoot partners Michael L. Bell, Haley A. Cox and James W. Gibson have obtained a defense verdict on behalf of an Alabama obstetrician/gynecologist after a ten-day trial in which plaintiff’s counsel asked the jury for $17 million in damages.
The plaintiff alleged that Lightfoot’s client fell below the standard of care in managing the plaintiff’s labor and delivery process, resulting in a pre-birth brain injury to her son.
The Lightfoot defense team aggressively defended the case and showed the jury—through expert testimony, medical literature and factual evidence—that the doctor acted appropriately in treating the patient and complied with the standard of care in all respects. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a defense verdict after roughly two hours of deliberations.
Bell’s litigation career spans more than 25 years. He has defended clients in a wide range of matters, including those involving medical malpractice, product liability, commercial litigation, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and class actions.
Cox represents clients as defense counsel in cases involving product defect claims, serious personal injuries and other high stakes matters in the Southeast and beyond. Her matters range from product liability actions and medical malpractice lawsuits to complex business disputes.
Gibson’s practice focuses on product liability, medical malpractice and consumer fraud defense. He has also handled business disputes, toxic torts cases, legal malpractice cases, construction defect claims and class actions.
