Bob Coleman's practice is informed by three decades of in-house experience.
Prior to joining Lightfoot, Bob spent more than 30 years serving as in-house counsel to life insurance, investment advisor and real estate development companies. Before entering private practice he was vice president, secretary and general counsel to Liberty LIfe Insurance Company, the U.S. insurance operations of Royal Bank of Canada.
This wealth of in-house experience allows Bob to understand the issues that general counsel face each and every day. His clients benefit from this insight as he provides counsel on a variety of matters that include negotiating service and vendor contracts; third-party administration and other outsourcing contracts; commercial loans; acquisitions; leases; confidentiality agreements and real estate purchase deals.
Because he has been in their shoes, Bob understands risk and knows that compliance issues are always top-of-mind for in-house counsel. He devotes a significant amount of his practice to providing advice designed to help avoid legal issues and assisting with development of policies, procedures, manuals and training programs to help mitigate risk. In addition, Bob has broad experience handling corporate security matters and insurance operations.
Bob is a director of both the North Carolina and South Carolina Life & Health Guaranty Associations, serving as chairman of the South Carolina Association and secretary of the North Carolina Association. He also serves on the Board of Visitors of Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and is an active member of Christ Church Episcopal.
Bob resides in Greenville, South Carolina, with his wife, Claudia. Both of their children are grown, making them empty nesters with the exception of two golden retrievers. In his free time, he enjoys dove hunting, in-shore fishing, playing a bad game of golf, gardening and drawing.
