Lightfoot Partner Brandon Essig Speaks at Federal Public Defenders Office Event
July 20, 2017
On July 12, 2017, Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC partner Brandon K. Essig addressed members of the state’s criminal defense bar at an event sponsored by the Federal Public Defenders Office for the Middle District of Alabama. The title of his speech was “Representing a Client Being Investigated by the Federal Government.”
Drawing on nearly a decade spent as an Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting white collar cases, Essig provided practical insights to those in attendance. Speaking for an hour, he offered valuable insights into how federal investigations generally proceed. Essig also discussed the role defense counsel can play at each stage of a probe, and how to best interact with prosecutors and the U.S. Attorney’s office.
At Lightfoot, Essig is a member of the firm’s White Collar Criminal Defense and Corporate Investigations practice group. He has tried cases in all manner of venues, primarily as lead counsel, and also has significant experience conducting internal investigations. Essig’s time at the Department of Justice gave him a unique perspective on the challenges that companies, executives and individuals face when the government comes calling — which he now puts to good use on behalf of his clients at Lightfoot.
